When a press release reads like this:
"Cousin Marnie swears allegiance to Loretta Lynn and Kanye West from her bedroom at the top of her mother's house on an estate in Hackney, while at her live show you’ll see her stomping around her own woodland of neon white rabbits."..... then it's pretty much guaranteed to get my attention, and indeed Cousin Marnie, (aka Julie Ann Hartigan), a 21 year old Londoner, is most definitely one to watch.
With a name inspired by Alfred Hitchcock's 1964 psychological thriller 'Marnie', starring Tippi Hedren - the singer blends hip hop, left-field electro-pop, noir beats and country music sensibilities (her heroines include Loretta Lynn and Tammy Wynette) with haunting vocals which draw you into her ghostly but fantastical universe (see previous release "You've Been Fooling Me Baby").
‘Cain’ is the first track to be taken from her new EP and is produced by David Kosten, the man behind various Bat For Lashes tracks including the brilliant "The Wall" - in fact, Cousin Marnie and Bat for Lashes should just collaborate.
The track is due for release in April via independent label, Tiny Consumer, with a remix from Brighton duo IYES - you can also catch her debut show at this year's SxSW in Austin.
