Oscar-nominated filmmaker Spike Jonze is renowned for directing films with a highly emotional temperature, such as the funny and inventive "Being John Malkovich" and "Adaptation."
He also collaborated with Kanye West on the dark and twisted short "We Were Once A Fairytale" - a story about a lonely L.A. man, feeling lost and unable to move forward with his life.
His latest offering, "Her" stars Joaquin Phoenix as Theodore Twombly, a ghost writer who pens letters for other people's loved ones, separated from his wife Catherine (Rooney Mara).
Set in Los Angeles in an unspecified time, but the not-too-distant future, Theodore is a lonely soul and socially awkward character. Broken by the end of his relationship, he becomes intrigued with an advanced operating system, programmed individually to each personal user - a human machine and ideal companion.
His machine, 'Samantha' (voiced by Scarlett Johansson), is a bright, insightful and sensitive female, and eventually over time their friendship deepens into love.
The film opens in the UK next year on Valentines Day and is most definitely a poignant tale not to miss, one which measures the emotional toll of living and connecting too deeply within the virtual world.
