I look for new ideas because I like to be in a state of creative anxiety and insecurity. If I feel sure of myself I cannot be creative, I try to renew myself.” - Tony Viramontes

A new book exploring the flamboyant life of 1980s fashion illustrator Tony Viramontes will be released next month, entitled 'The Bad, The Beautiful and the Damned', written by author Dean Rhys Morgan with a foreward by designer Jean-Paul Gaultier.

Viramontes' post-punk theatrical illustrations of iconic couture included work for Valentino, Chanel, Gaultier, Claude Montana and Dior, defining the glamour and high fashion ideals of the 80s. A Parson's graduate, Viramontes visually immortalised the new-wave Zeitgeist of the neon eighties and captured style and music icons of the era including Duran Duran, Paloma Picasso, Janet Jackson and Naomi Campbell, all in his signature bold, graphic aesthetic. He died of AIDS at the age of 31 in 1988.

The book features 250 original fashion illustrations, portraits, album covers and polaroids, bringing together his archive of work for the first time, and will be available in the UK from 7th October (by Laurence King Publishing).
Just in time for New York Fashion Week, in homage to Viramontes and the book's release, Bergdorf Goodman have unveiled Viramontes-inspired window displays, so if you're at #NYFW, go check them out and instagram some pics, obviously.
