Isabella Rossellini x Vogue Italia x Steven Meisel

The lensman behind all of Vogue Italia's covers and lead editorials since 1988 - Steven Meisel - is back yet again for the June 2012 issue, which features one of the most beautiful women in the world on its cover, Isabella Rossellini.

Meisel is renowned for his innovative vision, tapping into trends and exploring cultures - his interpretations often shaping our understanding of contemporary fashion. S
o admittedly this Rossellini cover is a bit *safe* and the visual does not really tell us a story.
However, despite some of the negative internet forum feedback its attracted complaining that the image "looks dated", I actually really like it! Rossellini looks natural and full of spirit, which is just as well, because the iconic Italian actress is part of Vogue's new 'Health Initiative' - a campaign to promote a healthier approach to the way body image is represented by the fashion industry - so no more models channelling the Kate Moss-inspired 'Nothing Tastes As Good As Skinny Feels' look!

19 of Vogue's Editors across its International editions will adhere to this new philosophy:

"The Health Initiative campaign is a project aimed at protecting models, who for many women represent an ideal to follow and imitate, so that they are encouraged and supported in taking care of themselves, facing all the burning issues, such as health and diet, that afflict the world of fashion. A revolutionary step forward therefore, but a necessary and certainly very positive one not just for the models themselves, but also for all women across the world". (Barbara Sini - Vogue Italia)

Other models who appear in Meisel's editorial for June include Donna Mitchell, Lauren Helm, Susan Forristal, Carolyn Murphy and Guinevere Van Seenus. See images below:
