A Portrait Of Androgyne x Dossier Magazine

Gender ambiguous French artist Claude Cahun is best remembered for her staged self-portraits which incorporated an element of masquerade - a surrealist visual aesthetic which has influenced countless artists including Nan Goldin and Cindy Sherman.
Cahun's alter-ego "Androgyne" is now the subject of a fashion feature for the SS12 issue of Dossier magazine in a shoot featuring Belgian model Hannelore Knuts (channelling David Bowie x Tilda Swinton) wearing costumes by designer Christiane Hultquist (aka Christian Joy) mixed with pieces by Thom Browne, Proenza Schouler and Jil Sander, styled by Polina Aronova and lensed by New York-based photography duo ioulex.
Watch a video from the shoot HERE, courtesy of the NY Times 'T' magazine, in which Knuts recites pieces of Cahun’s “Heroines” set to music by Philippe Bresson.

It's a wonderful play on the theatrical avant-garde and helps to define why writer and poet AndrĂ© Breton once referred to Cahun as “one of the most curious spirits of our time.”
