Prabal Gurung's Sensual Flowers SS12

US designer Prabal Gurung's SS12 collection is inspired by fetishistic photographer Nobuyoshi Araki's (1997) "Sensual Flower" series, and features Victoria’s Secret model Candice Swanepoel, lensed by Daniel Jackson with styling by Tiina Laakkonen.

Digitalised floral prints, flirty feminine ruffles, flutter-sleeve dresses (using white mesh lady-fied in Gurung's unique and experimental way), and sheer fabrics accessorised by sky high heels and seductive red lips bring an edgy, sexy and romantic mix to the high-impact campaign, along with Swanepoel's provocatively contorted body.
Anyone that follows Araki’s work will also know that he's quite avant-garde (meaning he's fond of S&M), hence Gurung playing with subverting the ladylike credo and including bondage-inspired rope belts (pic 2 ) in his line. The designer told The New York Times he referenced bondage but “not in an obvious way… to cut the sweetness.”

As with Araki's erotically charged images of flowers, Gurung's latest campaign shows the great strength that lies in the power of individual images, and the interplay within them.
