Valentino To Launch Virtual Museum

The man with the tan, a.k.a, Valentino, and his long-term business partner Giancarlo Giammetti, are to pay homage to the designer by launching the Valentino Garavani Virtual Museum, an online archive which will feature 50 years of Valentino’s work. Featuring photographs, videos, ad campaigns, illustrations, sketches, red carpet moments ( Julia Roberts' 2001 Academy Awards gown), and over 300 other dresses in 3D allowing visitors to click and revolve them - including Jackie O's wedding outfit - the virtual space is constructed to resemble a real museum, with elements of Roman architecture and vast sunlit courtyards. Giammetti described the inspiration behind the design:
"With Novacom's and Kinmonth-Monfreda's help, we were able to create an architecture that belongs to Italy, and to Rome, Valentino's epicenter, which is described by light and shade, chiaroscuro, and at the same time is unbuildable, an architecture only possible in a computer-generated world."
Valentino, who retired from his fashion house in 2008, told WWD: "I see it as part of my legacy. I am happy that thousands of students, young designers and fashion people will be able to see and study my work in every aspect of it, and in a manner easy and accessible for the younger generations. But it is also important to remember things of the past, to review the fashion that has shaped our lives. I would call it 'Future Memory.'"
The virtual museum, which if it were real would fill more than 107,500 square feet of exhibition space, will be unveiled via a live-streamed YouTube press conference to mark the launch on December 5th.
