Naughty But Nice: Kriss Soonik

When I think "underwear as outerwear" I think Beyonce, Rihanna, Lady Gaga, Britney, Katy Perry, JLo, Taylor Momsen, and the late Amy Winehouse, to name just a few examples of the trend in layering lingerie with day and eveningwear. Oh, and of course, Madonna and that gold conical bra in the 90s, which was designed to damage a retina from 3 ft away, so that also fell under the term "dangerous underwear as outerwear". Of course, some of the names above do win the award for baring just a little too much flesh, but there are ways to flash a frou frou bra under your favourite dress seductively and stylishly, without looking like you just stepped out of a bordello - and championing this trend is lingerie and loungewear designer, Kriss Soonik. Estonian born Soonik launched her first collection in 2008, introducing a fresh and modern twist on the concept of "underwear as outerwear" - think cute babydolls under sleek and sexy tuxedo jackets and pretty lace bras peeping out temptingly from under sheer tops. Soonik's creations pay exquisite attention to detail and her influences include Barbarella, old style Hollywood glamour and even Manga superheroines, designed for "Simple Girls With Super Powers". That's all of us then huh?
In 2009 Soonik defined the term "loungerie" - a mix of versatile luxe loungewear combining elements of urban, feminine charm with sultry, edgy intimates. Think beautiful velour wraps you can throw over a vest and skinny jeans for Sunday brunch - a stylish step-up from tracksuits and hoodies - and for AW11/12 the collection includes mesh, patent and satin detailing.

For SS12, animal print GRRR's its way into the lingerie/loungerie mix. Watch a behind-the-scenes video of the shoot for the campaign (below), which is a quirky mix of fashion, fun and frolics with flippers and inflatable dolphins thrown in!

Soonik also presented a Live Christmas Campaign shoot this past week, which took place at Clerkenwell's Frameless Gallery. Featuring coquettish models in the flesh photographed on a set which had a Victoriana feel to it - dress up props included sequinned catwoman-like masks, saucy handcuffs and whips. Naughty but nice! and yes, after a glass or two of fizz I did try the handcuffs on, luckily they came with a key.
