New York Magazine - Fall Fashion 2011 Issue

New York Magazine presents its Fall Fashion Issue for 2011 with four covers by photographer Brigitte Lacombe, featuring fashion heavyweights and trend setters - including androgynous male model Andrej Pejic, former editor of Pop magazine, street-style icon and Miuccia Prada's muse, Shala Monroque - film star Isabella Rossellini with daughter and model, Elettra Wiedemann, and finally, legendary supermodel and Avedon muse, China Machado
The special issue also includes portraits and profiles with its cover stars and I think you'll agree, it's an eclectic mix of faces, particularly using Bosnian-born Pejic, which shows a progressive move for a mainstream magazine. But then The New York Times did declare 2010 "the year of the transsexual", so maybe NY mag is bringing it back for Winter 2011! Kudos to them for not choosing the "obvious" transgender face though, eg; Brazilian model Lea T - favourite muse of Givenchy's creative director Riccardo Tisci - who famously underwent a sex-change. Unlike Pejic, who once referred to as a "femme fatale" with an ambiguous sexual identity (it's a he, just so you know) - Lea T is most definitely now all woman. But will she make it on to FHM's 100 sexiest women poll, as Pejic did this year (in 98th place)? A bold and forward-thinking move by a magazine that's not exactly a bastion of gender-equality heh? Well, kind of, but not really. When the magazine realised Pejic was a man, they removed the entry from their online edition. His breasts obviously weren't big enough.
Fashion can inevitably blur gender boundaries through highly stylised campaigns that keep us guessing, but then that's the fun part and that's what we love about it. So well done New York magazine, you'll be pleased to know you've made it into the No 1 spot on my list.
