Who What Wear: Alexa Chung

Alexa Chung, go on, try and pretend you don’t know who she is? Impossible isn’t it, EVERYONE knows who Alexa is. Just like Anna Wintour, Ed-In-Chief of American Vogue, who once described her as “a phenomenon”.
I wouldn’t go that far, but she is pretty famous for lots of things. Like being a muse to fashion designers, model, TV presenter, fashion designer, DJ and famed for her mash-it-up, throw-it-on mix of designer, high-street and vintage style. I bet you didn’t know that there’s even a website called I Want to be Alexa Chung in homage to the Brit. No. Really.

The 27 year-old first showed up on our radars when she hosted Channel 4's teen music show, Popworld, after an early stint as a model. She then went on to present shows like T4‘s Frock Me, The Devil Wears Primark - a documentary about ethics in the fashion industry - and appeared alongside Gok Wan on Gok’s Fashion Fix (the show where he puts a belt on everything). She’s also leant her face to campaigns including Australian fashion label Antipodium, Oxfam's ethical fashion range, DKNY Jeans and for the British High Street retailer, New Look.

Currently hosting ‘Gonzo with Alexa Chung’ for MTV UK, she also co-hosted NBC's 2011 Golden Globe Arrivals Special in January, commenting on what A-list celebs were frocking. And because they just love her unique style over the pond, she also launched a design partnership with US brand Madewell - a collaboration which confirmed her status as a “fashion icon” for her quirky Brit cool. The designs were simple and edgy everyday wear, featuring denim shorts, cardigans, girlie dresses and casual tees. The collection made its debut at New York Fashion Week.

A regular on the frow at Burberry, House of Holland and Vivienne Westwood during London Fashion Week, Chung was also the face of Lacoste’s “Joy of Pink” fragrance campaign in 2010, and like 60s actress Jane Birkin who has a namesake bag, Chung was also the inspiration behind Mulberry's 'Alexa'. ELLE UK bestowed her with their Style Award for Best Dressed TV Presenter in 2009 and the BFC awarded her their British Style Award in 2010, which "recognises an individual who embodies the spirit of British fashion and is an international ambassador for the UK as a leading creative hub for fashion" - not bad for a girl whose signature attire includes oversize cardis and socks worn with sandals.

Returning to modelling again this March, her cool credentials earned her a campaign with Italian sportswear brand Supergra, who hailed her as "
one of the most influential style icons of our time". The brand selected Chung as part of their 100th anniversary, and to help them reach a wider UK audience by flying the flag for 'Preppy Chic'. The collection, which features a mix of 50s retro chic clothing and accessories such as iconic plimsolls and pumps, also reflects Chung's own personal style aesthetic.

By now you’re probably thinking everything Alexa touches turns to gold, and you would be right (darn her). She even charmed Arctic Monkey’s frontman Alex Turner in 2007 and the pair have been a regular "pose for the paps" couple on the music festival circuit ever since.
And just because we can never have too much Alexa, she also appears as Vogue UK’s June 2011 cover girl, which runs with the headline “What is it about Alexa Chung?”
Anyhow, as you master that evil side-eye and turn a funny shade of green at the girl who has the world at her designer-clad feet, I refer you to an interview in Life and Style with the Guardian earlier this year, where Chung was asked “Property aside, what’s the most expensive thing you’ve bought?” - to which she replied “A Chanel 2.55 handbag at Heathrow airport....during a hangover”.

Go on, admit it, she’s your and my kind of girl!
