Wear Your Heart On Your Sleeve.....With Katharine Hamnett and Selfridges



Katharine Hamnett has lent her early '80s signature slogan tee design to Selfridge's 'Project Ocean' campaign, which aims to highlight the potentially disastrous consequences of global overfishing. The fashion pioneer's oversized T-Shirts used large block-letter slogans which were adopted by bands of that era, including Wham! and Frankie Goes To Hollywood - and were an innovative and popular way to direct attention to the many important social and political causes of the time. Such as the memorable meeting with Prime Minister Margaret Thatcher where Hamnett wore a "58% DON'T WANT PERSHING" tee which referenced public polls showing opposition to the basing of Pershing missiles in the UK. 
Over 20 years on, Selfridges choice of commissioning Hamnett’s iconic design proves they were and still are the best marketing/PR tool in combining the call to action with fashion. The tees include the slogans "STOP AND THINK", "NO MORE FISH IN THE SEA" and "SAVE THE WORLD" and are now available in store and online priced at £40 (available for men, women and children).
